Rodys KP is the powder form of Rodys K, i.e. the sodium salt of naphthalene sulfonic acid formaldehyde polycondensates (NSF). Like the entire Rodys series, Rodys K neither has an environmental classification, nor does it contribute to increasing the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in products for which it is used. It is also distinguished by low content of calcium and iron ions.
It is a surfactant composed of a hydrophobic (organic chain) and hydrophilic (sulfone groups) parts. Due to this structure, it has dispersing properties, because it can adsorb on solid particles. It forms a layer of unipolar electrical charges on them (sulfone groups) and its mutual repulsion causes the breakdown of agglomerates.
Rodys KP was created for the needs of the rubber industry, and is mainly used in the emulsion polymerization process of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Its chemical structure and physicochemical parameters favour the creation of colloidal systems of solids in a continuous liquid phase (water), creating a stable dispersion in time. The product is compatible with other additives used in the process.
A small addition of Rodys KP causes very good dispersion of latex particles formed in the process, in the aqueous phase. This way, it prevents the formation of coagulates during both polymerization and degasification of the product. The obtained styrene-butadiene rubber has the desired physicochemical (e.g. Mooney viscosity, polydispersity, vitrification temperature) and mechanical (tensile strength, elongation at break) properties. Besides, the presence of Rodys KP in the reaction system does not adversely affect the polymerization rate.
The main application of the Rodys KP is emulsion polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber. It can also be used in emulsion polymerization processes of other types of rubbers. Because it is offered in powder form with low moisture content and low bulk density, its transport and storage are financially advantageous.
