Rodys RP is the powder form of Rodys R, i.e. the sodium salt of polycondensate of naphthalene acids with formaldehyde (NSF). Like Rodys R, it neither has an environmental classification, nor does it increase the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the products for which it is used. It is also distinguished by low content of calcium and iron ions. This product is mainly dedicated to reactions occurring in the aquatic environment. Rodys RP is offered in the form of powder with low moisture content and low bulk density, so its transport and storage are financially advantageous.
Rodys RP is a surfactant composed of an organic chain (hydrophobic group) and a sulfone group which is the hydrophilic part of the polymer. This structure translates into its dispersing properties, i.e. the formation of mostly colloidal systems and non-coagulant suspensions of solids in a continuous liquid phase (water). Rodys RP particles adsorbing onto solid particles, form a layer of unipolar electric charges on them. Their mutual repulsion causes the disintegration of agglomerates and their uniform dispersion in the continuous phase of the system.
Rodys RP, which is the powder equivalent of Rodys R, was designed for the needs of the rubber industry, and is mainly used in the emulsion polymerization process of styrene and butadiene leading to the production of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Its chemical structure and physicochemical parameters favour the creation of colloidal systems of solids in the liquid phase, creating time-stable dispersion. The product is compatible with other additives used in this process.
Rodys RP used in small amounts causes very good dispersion of latex particles formed in the production process in the aqueous phase. This way, it prevents the formation of its coagulates during both polymerization and degasification. The product does not adversely affect both the physicochemical (e.g. polydispersity, Mooney viscosity, vitrification temperature), mechanical (tensile strength, elongation at break) properties of the styrene-butadiene rubber produced, as well as the speed of the polymerization reaction itself.
The main application of Rodys RP is emulsion polymerization of styrene with butadiene. Still, it can also be used in emulsion polymerization processes of other types of rubber or various types of aqueous suspensions.
