Tetraethoxyorthosilane(TEOS) is used as a liquid precursor of silica with SiO2 content of 27-29%. The product is used as a cross-linking agent in silicone rubbers, a drying agent in composites, as an admixture in adhesives, in organic rubber, as an additive to pigments and paints for anti-corrosive coatings, e.g. in zinc paints.
TEOS is also used in the production of silica aerogels, which are further used as an excellent material for thermal insulation (λ = 15-25 mW/m.K). In the semiconductor industry, it is used in integrated circuits to create insulating layers of silica glass.
Tetraethoxysilane is used as a basic precursor in the production of macromolecular silicones, organosilicones or in polymer modifications. It is a coupling agent in paints and varnishes. It is applied directly onto a surface to create a highly hydrophobic protective layer.
Paints with the addition of TEOS are used in the protection of industrial structures (steel infrastructure, pipelines, bridges, windmills, oil rigs, petrochemical industry, power industry, etc.) and anti-corrosive coatings for marine applications (sea containers, construction and maintenance of vessels and their equipment).
Tetraethoxysilane with a higher purity is used in the production of xerogelsand optical fibres. In integrated circuits, it is used to make dielectric SiO2 layers.
At a normal temperature and pressure, tetraethoxysilane is a liquid with a melting point of -77°C and a boiling point of 167.3°C. Its density is lower than the density of water (0.934 g/cm3) at 20°C and it has a moderate viscosity of 0.2 cP at 25°C. In water, TEOS undergoes slow hydrolysis. It is soluble in benzene and ether, and miscible with alcohol. At a standard temperature and pressure, it has the form of a transparent liquid.
