Roksol STE is an auxiliary agent used in the tanning industry. It is an anionic lubricating preparation for chrome, vegetable tanned leather and fur skins. The product is a mixture of anionic emulsifiers and aliphatic compounds containing carboxyl groups. It forms milky O/W type emulsions (oil in water), light beige to brown in colour, with a tendency to delaminate. Dissolves in polar solvents. Highly resistant to electrolytes, trivalent chromium and aluminium salts and hard water.
The product can be mixed with all anionic and non-ionic lubricants. It is also possible to mix Roksol STE with cationic lubricants in the preparation of the so-called multi-charged compositions (at the appropriate ratios).
Roksol STE has the ability to emulsify crude fats. The stability of the emulsion with crude fats depends on the ratio of the components and the preparation method. Technically useful emulsions (emulsion stability over 2 hours) are obtained for spindle oil and crude fish oil at a 1:1 weight ratio (oil: Roksol STE). Depending on the storage time and conditions, there is a possibility of brown deposits of greasing components in the product. The low viscosity of the commercial product, even at lower temperatures, facilitates its handling in industrial conditions.
The solutions of the product in water are transparent or opalescent. The stability of aqueous solutions of Roksol STE is almost unlimited. In the preparation of Roksol STE emulsions with other lubricants (e.g. crude fats) it is advisable to mix preparations in the form of commercial products and then dilute them with water.
When used for self-lubrication of chrome tanned leather, it gives a product of high softness and bulkiness , with a smooth, tight and absorbent grain. The product has a strong whitening effect on the natural colour of chrome tanned leather, and the colour obtained is resistant to sunlight.
Compared to anionic liqueurs used in chrome tanning, Roksol STE is distinguished by the following functional features:
stronger softening effect on the leather structure,
stronger whitening of the natural leather colour,
improved equalising effect in relation to anionic pigments, with a lower intensity of colouring being compensated by higher uniformity of the colour obtained and deeper penetration of the pigments into the skin tissue,
quicker and easier wettability of leather surface (this feature is desirable in industrial practice, making it possible to obtain a better and more even colour of spray-dyed leather),
more pleasant, silky to touch greased leather,
a characteristic feature of Roksol STE in the lubrication of vegetable ease of penetration of the product into the skin tissue and the softening effect associated with this property.
The mixture of anionic emulsifiers and aliphatic compounds containing carboxyl groups, leather oiling agent, chrome tanning preparation, vegetable tanning agent, agent for tanning fur skins.
