Alkyl esters are formed as a result of the esterification reaction of an alkyl polyol (alcohol) with carboxylic acids. Their distinctive properties are due to the presence of the -C(=O)O- functional group. Esters come in various combinations depending on the substrates used in the reaction – methyl, ethyl, derivatives of vegetable oils or glycerol. They are components of natural wax.
An example of an alkyl ester is alkyl benzoate (C12-15) formed by the reaction of benzoic acid with C12-C15 alcohols. It is mainly used in the broad cosmetics industry, mainly in personal hygiene products. The versatility of the ester is due to its antimicrobial, caring and protective properties.
