ETHERS - structure and production

Ethers are a group of chemical compounds characterised by the presence of a C-O-C bond, with the carbon atoms being attached to no more than one oxygen atom. This bond makes ethers stable and not overly reactive. Ethers are composed primarily of two organic groups connected by an oxygen atom, although there are also polyethers, which contain more than one C-O-C bond.

An example of such compounds is dimethyl ether, which is a gas. This colourless and odourless product is used as a propellant. It is produced in the process of methanol dehydration with additional DME rectification. It is characterised by good miscibility with water, an ability to dissolve polymers, but also compatibility with other propellants and solvents. As it causes no harmful effects on the ozone layer, it is an effective replacement for CFC compounds. It finds use mainly in aerosol-based cosmetic products, household chemistry, spray varnishes and paints, but also in foamed polystyrene foams. It is a product used in numerous industries.
