Esters belong to the group of organic chemical compounds. They are formed as a result of acid condensation with alcohols or phenols. Both inorganic and carboxylic acids are used in this process. Fatty acid esters form a particular group within this category of compounds. As a result of their reaction with glycerine, fats can be produced. They are one of the most common types of esters.
The fatty acids used to produce esters have different lengths of the carbon chain. Depending on the number of bonds, these acids can be classified as saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Common fatty acids include omega-3 and omega-9 acids, as well as linoleic acid. They are important nutrients for the human body, which is why esters based on these compounds are found in food, medicines and cosmetics.
Fatty acid esters also find use in the manufacturing of lubricants, plastics, engine fuel ingredients and other materials, as well as detergents.
