POLYETHYLENE GLYCOLS - structure and production

Polyethylene glycols (PEG) are a group of synthetic ethylene oxide polymers. They are produced by means of condensation polymerisation. There are various types of PEG, distinguished by their structure. The polymer chain length, and consequently molecule size, may range from a few (e.g. PEG-6) to a few thousand (e.g. PEG-25M) glycol units in a molecule. Depending on this number, PEGs also display different properties, so they can be used as solvents, emulsifiers, surface active agents, stabilisers, humectants, penetration enhancers, etc.

Polyethylene glycols are found primarily in various cosmetic products, e.g. creams, shower gels, and shampoos. They also find use in the food industry, construction, plastics manufacturing, and in substances dedicated for machining or wood treatment.
