SILICON - structure and production

Silicon is a chemical element that belongs to the half-metal group. It is found primarily in the outer layers of the Earth. It is the second most common element on the planet, after oxygen. In the form of silica SiO2 in its different polymorphic forms (crystobalite, tridymite, quartz), as well as silicates and aluminosilicates, it is present in most rocks that make up the Earth’s crust. Silicon can therefore be found on land, in the ocean waters, in thermal waters, but also in plants and in the bodies of animals.

Silicon can form various types of compounds, among which such chains as silicon-silicon, silicon-nitrogen-silicon, and silicon-oxygen-silicon can be found. One of the most vital among these compounds is silica, which constitutes the primary component of glass and sand, but silicon-based acids, silicates – their salts, as well as alkoxysilanes and chlorosilanes are also important.

The PCC Group has in its range high-quality silicon metal and microsilica, manufactured in state-of-the-art installations in Iceland. Production is powered by geothermal springs, ensuring that environmental considerations are met.
