What are sulfosuccinates?

Sulfosuccinates belonging to the group of anionic surfactants are derivatives of succinic acid from the group of dicarboxylic acids. These compounds are synthesized in the reaction of maleic anhydride with alcohols. The mono- and diesters obtained are then reacted with sodium sulphate to obtain salts, i.e. sodium sulfosuccinates.

Diesters in which the alcohol-derived carbon chain has less than 9 carbon atoms are well soluble in water. Branched chain esters are characterized by higher solubility in water than their linear equivalents. The higher alkyl analogs are well soluble in a wide range of organic solvents and have the ability to form micelles in many non-aqueous systems. The disadvantage of sulfosuccinate esters is that they are hydrolysed under acidic and basic conditions.

What are the properties and functions of sulfosuccinates?

Sulfosuccinates have the ability to lower surface tension and are classified as anionic surfactants. They act as emulsifiers and moisturizers, and also have excellent dispersing and foaming properties. They stabilize the formulations of finished products, giving them a clear consistency. They form microemulsions without the addition of other surfactants. Their properties ensure good degreasing and cleansing of the skin and hair. Their foam-forming abilities are used in the production of detergents for face, body and hair, in bath liquids, hand washing soaps, gels and shampoos.

Applications of sulfosuccinates

Sulfosuccinates can be used in cosmetic preparations for personal care and hygiene, as well as in the production of cleaning agents in household chemistry. Sulfosuccinates have found application in cosmetic preparations for personal care and hygiene, as well as in the production of cleaning agents in household chemistry. The compounds from this group are also used in the textile, construction, paper and chemical industries.
