Static electricity is an undesirable phenomenon which often manifests when using products made of various types of polymers. It involves an excess of electric charge gathering on materials, which leads to a spark discharge. This phenomenon hinders the use of products made of plastics, and can even reduce the users’ quality of life. It can also have an adverse effect on technological processes.
To minimise or completely eliminate static electricity, special antistatic additives are used. These are for example surfactants which reduce plastic polarisability. Their effect is focussed on reducing the specific resistance of material surfaces. This way it is possible to dissipate the charge and consequently mitigate static electricity. Antistatic agents are absolutely essential in plastic production.
