Buffering agents are chemical solutions of weak acids or weak bases with their salts, which help maintaining stable pH of the environment when another compound is added. As a result of adding hydrogen ions to the buffer, they are neutralised by bases. A similar situation occurs in the case of the introduction of hydroxide anions.

Buffers are used, e.g. in the personal care sector. Many cosmetic products, such as creams, shampoos and gels, contain components characterised by recommended pH for the skin or the hair. The buffers help maintain the pH in such products, which is important for their effectiveness and safety for users.
Examples of popular buffer solutions include: phosphate, acetate, and sodium phosphate.
